In Guanacaste, the beaches scroll from Nicaragua down to Santa Theresa and all of them are not as easy to access as others. The beach towns of Playas del Coco and Playa Tamarindo are the most populated and have the vast majority of hotels and vacation rentals near them. South beyond Playa Tamarindo to Samara, Santa Theresa and Montezuma becomes a hard day of driving on bumpy, dirt roads.
Playas del Coco offers a close vicinity to Nicaragua, Rincon de la Vieja, Sailing, Fishing, snorkeling and some of the best surf when departing to Withes Rock and Ollies Point.
Playa Tamarindo offers much of the same as Playas del Coco but a little further distance to the places to the north. Tamarindo also is home to great surfing for beginners to professionals directly on the beach. For continued surf locations, it is best to stay here, Playa Grande or drift south of Tamarindo to Samara and Santa Theresa areas.
