During January, Palmares hosts their 'Fiestas', a large fair organized by a local committee which have become along with Zapote in December, and Liberia in July, one of the largest fairs in the country. This fair lasts for two weeks, with two days of special note: the 'Tope' (a massive horseback riding parade through town) and the 'Carnaval' (carnival); it is said that during these days you can find over 500,000 people in Palmares. It ranks 2nd in most beer consumed in a yearly festival (after Oktoberfest)
Later in January, Playas del Coco will host its own version called "Fiestas Playas del Coco" from January 24-28 which also includes a "Tope" and Bull riding.
Bull riding will be featured at the bull ring located down the road to Ocotal and left on the second entrance (or dirt road) before the first bridge. Get there early as usually the bull riding is over by 10pm. also included at the Bull riding are many games and food stands that are serving local flavor. And of course there are plenty of places to buy a beer or two.
A "Tope" is a celebration when all the people in the surround areas of Playas del Coco get together and meet in Bar Matapalo (at the South end of Playas del Coco beach) and mount their horses. In parade fashion, the horseback riders join together and ride down the beach towards the park and turn up the street to continue up the main road. This is a major event for Playas del Coco and driving down the street is NOT reccommended at this time. Bring your chair and cooler and sit along the street and watch the horses go by.
See you at Fiestas Playas del Coco!
